ARTIST FEATURE: GILBERT DAROY
I’ve been an editorial cartoonist/caricaturist with the PDI since 2003. Prior to that that I’ve been a professional animator for tv shows like Disney tv, Hanna-barbera, warner bros. etc. I’ve also created independent animated shorts with the help of mowelfund. But my real passion is with illustration and caricature. I’ve been corresponding and taking tips from the artist/caricaturist David Levine of the New York review of Books since 1998. Caricature for him is not a one-shot deal. You have to analyse forms, planes, and assemble them in a cohesive recognizable form. The key word is recognizable. You have to do alot of thumbnails and derivatives of these thumbnails. It’s a facinating journey with lots of mistakes and discoveries.until you reach a likeness that has a life of its own. He died a year ago from macular degeneration in New York. Aside from him I like the works of Seiler, Moyse, etc. although I’m not adept at digital tools yet, Soon I hope.
